1979 San Diego Chargers hold off 1979 Dallas Cowboys in Strat-O-Matic Pro Football fantasy matchup

The 1979 Dallas Cowboys (11-5-0) played the 1979 San Diego Chargers (12-4-0) at San Diego Stadium. The score shows a fairly even-handed game up until the end, but the true story of the game is that the Cowboys had a dominating offense that stumbled due to turnovers.

The game featured Dallas QB Roger Staubach passing for 4 touchdowns and Dallas HB Tony Dorsett rushing for 115 yards, including a 35-yard run, and catching passes for 153 yards and 1 TD, including a 55-yard reception. San Diego's SE John Jefferson led the Chargers with 136 yards receiving, including a 65-yard reception, his longest of the year, while FB Clarence Williams rushed for 104 yards.

1961 Houston Oilers beat 1961 San Diego Chargers in Strat-O-Matic Pro Football 1961 AFL Championship Replay

1961 Houston Oilers punter Jim Norton (43) chases down 1961 San Diego Chargers halfback Keith Lincoln (22)

With 9:15 remaining in the fourth quarter, 1961 Houston Oilers head coach Walley Lemm told veteran QB George Blanda to take a seat. On his last 15 pass attempts, Blanda had completed only 3 passes and had thrown 2 interceptions, and the game was on the line. The 1961 San Diego Chargers had just tied it up 20-20, and young QB Jacky Lee hadn't even broken a sweat, so Lemm sent in Lee.

Lee then led the Oilers on a 13-play, 82-yard drive for a touchdown, which left the Chargers facing a long march of 80 yards if they hoped to tie the score again, but after 42 yards through the air, and after a fifth sack on the day by the Oilers' LLB Doug Cline, San Diego failed to convert on fourth down, and the Oilers won the 1961 AFL Championship 27-20.
